Exercise Bikes
Exercise bikes and exercise cycles are one of the most popular and practical types of home fitness equipment on the market and have been for many years. An exercise bike is a piece of fitness equipment that allows you to cycle while staying in one place. They are easy to operate and offer a relatively inexpensive alternative to equipment such as treadmills and cross trainers whilst still providing the tools necessary for a high quality aerobic workout.
Benefits of Using an Exercise Bike
There are many benefits of using exercise bikes. The low weight-bearing nature of the cycle helps reduce stress on the hips, ankles and knees. This makes the exercise cycle particularly useful for beginners as well as the elderly and those recovering from injury.
Exercise bikes offer a great cardiovascular workout which works your heart and lungs. The target muscles when biking are the calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors and glutes. Furthermore, exercise bikes will help strengthen the mid section and tone the core muscles, abs and obliques when used regularly.
Types of Exercise Bike
Upright exercise bikes - On an upright exercise cycle you sit upright as you would on a typical push bicycle.
Indoor Cycles / Spin Bikes - Although indoor cycles (or spin bikes) are technically upright exercise bikes, their design is very different. Spin bikes have a similar design to an outdoor racing cycle. Spin bikes are very popular and are often used for instense, high calorie burn workouts. These are the type of bikes used in spinning classes in gyms and health clubs.
Recumbent Exercise Bikes - Recumbent cycles place you in a more horizontal position. They are very comfortable and are very easy on the lower back. They are excellent for low impact workouts, conditioning and physical therapy.
Exercise Bike Features
Braking Sytem Resistance - The most common form of resistance used for modern exercise bikes is magnetic which is very smooth and quiet. It works by creating a magnetic field to generate resistance which can be adjusted by the user accordingly. Mechanical resistance uses brake pads that come in contact with the flywheel to create resistance. The harder the pads are pushed against the flywheel, the greater the resistance and vice versa. Air resistance uses a high pressure air flow which increases as you pedal faster to generate resistance.
Flywheel - Generally, the heavier the flywheel, the smoother the ride.
Console & Programmes - Most exercise bikes will have a built in computer that offers various programmes and provides feedback on a multitude of data including heart rate, distance and speed. These features will vary from cycle to cycle. Our top of the range Tunturi E60 Media Upright Magnetic Cycle offers a huge range of built in features to enhance and improve your biking experience including a built in DVD receiver allowing you to watch your favourite digital TV programmes and DVDs whilst you train.
