Treadmills

Treadmills are popular pieces of cardio fitness equipment used for running, jogging or walking whilst remaining in one place. Often referred to as running machines, they enable a convenient cardiovascular workout from the comfort and safety of your own home. They are one of the most popular pieces of fitness equipment here at Workout For Less and for good reason.

Benefits of Using a Treadmill

There are numerous benefits of using a treadmill. Treadmills provide an excellent platform to burn fat and calories, reduce stress on joints, increase cardiovascular endurance, improve muscle tone and definition, increase bone density and lung capacity and improve overall health and fitness in general. They can be used effectively by anyone, from complete fitness novices to professional athletes. Whether you're looking to become more active or you're training for the London Marathon, a treadmill provides you with 24/7 convenience to help you reach your fitness goals.

Types of Treadmill

Folding Treadmills - If you are short of space or space is a priority in your home, a folding treadmill is the answer. Most modern machines have the ability to fold.

Non-Folding Treadmills - If you have ample space and foldability is not a priority, a non-folding running machine may be suitable.

Commercial Treadmills - These are designed for heavy usage in a commercial environment such as gyms and health clubs. However, commercial treadmills are often favoured by many for use at home as they typically represent the highest quality treadmills with the most advanced and greatest range of features.

Treadmill Features

Motor - Electric treadmills are fitted with an electric motor which powers the running machine. The power of the motor is measured in horsepower (HP) which determines the strength of the motor and it's efficiency. A stronger motor can better handle larger, heavier users and will also last longer. The make of the motor itself can also determine it's quality even if the specification appears to be the same.

Speed - Treadmills can produce a range of speeds that you can alter when working out. The maximum speed may be an important factor in determining which machine is right for you. On average, speeds of around 8km/h-10km/h are considered as jogging. Speeds of 10km/h and upwards are considered as running, so a maximum speed of 13km/h is enough for most people.

Belt - The belt of a running machine should be long enough and wide enough to accommodate your height and running style. Cushioning or shock absorption systems help reduce stress on your joints and will vary between brands. The best absorption systems disperse the energy from impact of your foot hitting the deck whilst also providing a firm platform to run on. Our top range Tunturi models have a built in orthopaedic belt called T-Flex™. T-Flex™ is a unique and comfortable running surface. Recommended by physiotherapists, these belts are safe, shock absorbing and protect your muscles and joints.

Incline - Incline or elevation determines the gradient of the belt. If you are looking to do a lot of uphill walking or running, you may want a greater incline (up to 12%). The greater the incline, the harder you will work and the greater your cardio workout. The incline may be adjusted either electronically or manually. Electronically means the incline can be adjusted whilst you are running, whilst a manual adjustment means you have to get off the treadmill to make the adjustment.

Console - Most modern treadmills come with a built in computer that enable you to select customised workouts, change speed, incline and other options to vary your workout and help you stay motivated. They also can provide feedback on data such as heart rate and BMI. Be sure to check the specification to see what features a particular console can offer.

Warranty - Make sure you check the warranty on an item to see what is covered and for how long. A mid-range or commercial treadmill will generally have better warranty than a cheaper or budget model. If you are unsure on the warranty on any piece of fitness equipment, please contact us.

Other features - Other aspects of a treadmill to consider include the maximum user weight, energy consumption, frame, running deck, feedback data and ergonomics. Our top range treadmills such as the Reebok T4.2 IWM offer a host of built in extra features to enhance and improve your workout experience.
