How to keep your home gym from smelling

Keeping your home gym smelling fresh and free from odours is essential if you want it to remain a pleasant and inviting area which encourages you to keep working out rather than turning you off! Here are some tips on how to achieve this:

Ventilation

This is probably the most important of all. If possible, open windows to allow fresh air in and to remove stale, stagnant air. Use fans to keep the air moving.

Clean your equipment

Make sure you have a supply of antibacterial wipes and antibacterial spray to hand, just as you would expect to see at the local gym. Ensure you wipe down each piece of equipment after use including benches, exercise bikes and rowing machines, treadmills, mats, all dumbbells, weights, bars and handles. Don’t forget smaller pieces of equipment such as resistance bands, yoga blocks and foam rollers. Sweat can accumulate on these surfaces and create odours.

Workout clothes

Ensure your workout clothes and towels are washed promptly after use. Dont leave damp clothing in washing baskets for long periods of time. That will create a hotbed of bacteria and increase odours. Ensure you keep your workout shoes and gym bag clean and dry. Avoid leaving sweaty shoes or gear in your gym space.

Use Gym Mats

Place gym mats or interlocking floor tiles under your equipment. These are easy to clean and prevent sweat from seeping into the floor.  Ensure they are cleaned regularly.

Storage

Store your gym equipment, accessories, and workout gear properly. Avoid leaving damp or sweaty items in the gym area, as this can lead to odours. Use storage solutions like bins or cabinets to keep items organised and contained.

Regularly Clean your home gym space

Dust and vacuum the gym area regularly to prevent dust and dirt buildup, which can contribute to odours. Mop any hard flooring surfaces with a mild disinfectant or a solution of water and vinegar.

Airing Out Equipment

If your equipment is foldable or portable, consider taking it outside periodically to air out and get some sunlight, which can help reduce odours.

Address Odours Promptly

If you notice persistent odours, identify and address the source. It could be an old gym bag, shoes, or an overlooked area that needs cleaning.

Fragrance

Use pleasant fragrances like essential oil diffusers or scented candles to create an inviting atmosphere in your home gym.

By following these tips and maintaining a regular cleaning and maintenance routine, you can keep your home gym smelling fresh and create a more enjoyable workout environment.
